Grammy-winning, internationally renowned Panamanian jazz pianist and composer Danilo Perez once dreamed of bringing a world-class jazz club to Panama. The dream persisted for decades — and with the opening of Danilo's Jazz Club on Sunday, February 23, 2014, it finally comes to life. Throughout his storied career — a story that's included stints with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Haden, Tito Puente, Gerardo Núñez, Wynton Marsalis and Wayne Shorter, to name a few — Perez has always kept a keen eye on the creative wealth of his homeland. Danilo's Jazz Club offers another exciting avenue through which we can enrich the culture of Casco Viejo and its surrounding neighborhoods, filling the streets with music from all over the world.
Inspired by the insights of a lifetime spent playing in jazz clubs around the globe, the intimate 50-seat club hosts a mix of international artists and local talent — many of whom trained with Danilo in the educational programs provided by the foundation that also bears his name. It will also serve as a central component of the foundation's annual Panama Jazz Festival, which draws guests and performers from abroad to its workshops and concerts.
Part of the proceeds from the Jazz Club go to fund the Danilo Perez Foundation, located just across the plaza from American Trade Hotel.
